Osborne Bay Anchoring Rally

24th - 25 June 2023

Is the Cutter Rig Superior to the Solent Rig for Offshore Cruising?

Osborne Bay anchoring rally 24th & 25th June

This will be a rally with a difference:-  we're going to stay at anchor overnight! If you love anchoring you should enjoy this rally, and if you've never tried anchoring now is your chance to discover the peaceful charm of this lovely way to stay somewhere.

Our destination is Osborne Bay, a familiar spot for many of us already which should provide sheltered conditions for the (currently) forecast SE SSE F3 to F4 winds.

The Bay is very popular for many sailors and motor boaters especially the Sunseeker crowd. It might be worth thinking about what's best for you: arrive early and grab a good spot or maybe even later when most of the boats have left. You could always re-position yourself later on if you cant find enough space close in when you arrive. On that subject: Colin McLean, who gave us a very good talk about anchoring earlier in the year, advises us to get as far in to the shore as we can consistent with having enough depth to take you through Low Water which for Portsmouth is 1.7m at 21:38 BST on Saturday evening.

This weekend's forecast is for lovely warm sailing and boating weather and of course you could always pop over and say hello even if you don't stay overnight. Just keep an eye open for HYC burgees or battle flags.

The last time we did anything like this was our New Members event where many of us stayed at anchor in Stoke Bay for the afternoon and very relaxing and enjoyable it was.

I will be available to help and advise, just call me on 07761 238153. We will be using VHF Channel 77 as an inter-club frequency for the weekend although monitoring on Ch11 (Portsmouth Harbour), Ch 12 (Southampton VTS) and others as appropriate together with Channel 16 is advised.
