'Calling for help for non-skippers' by Brian Masters

11th March 2023, 10:00 - 12:30

Tips to Sound Like a Pro on Your VHF Radio - Kingman Yacht Center

Usually, it is the skipper who knows most about the safety equipment on board and how to call for help. This session is aimed specifically at non-skippers and crew members!

This very practical training session will take place at The Hornet Services Sailing Club on the Saturday morning. Brian Masters, HYC member and RNLI volunteer, will be joined by other RNLI water safety volunteers and will describe the various methods that are available to call for help.  They will demonstrate various safety equipment found on board, and there will be the opportunity for you to try them out including practising 'Mayday' calls.  There will be plenty of time to ask questions and grow your knowledge.

Skippers - If you are, or have a crew who are, concerned about what to do if you are incapacitated or go overboard, then invite them to this session and it will hopefully give them more confidence as to what to do.

You are welcome to bring along your lifejackets for the RNLI to check and also bring a throw-line if you have one.

The itinerary for the morning is:

09:30     Hornet Bar opens for coffee

10:00     Talk in Fabrosa room and practicals

11:00     Break

11:30     Talk and Practicals

12:30     Finish
