Workshop: "Close Quarter Berthing" by Jonathan Clare and John Walker
We are planning a workshop on "Close Quarter Berthing" led by a panel from the committee chaired by Jonathan Clare, and, we hope, contributions from the floor .
Members have told us that manoeuvring, particularly in unfamiliar places and in more difficult conditions, is something which concerns a number of us. We are hoping that this session will act as a refresher for those who would like to be reminded of the principles, while perhaps allow some of you to share your experiences and concerns.
We will start off with a short talk from John Walker on the factors to be borne in mind, including the capabilities of both boat and crew, the prevailing conditions, and planning for both the approach to a berth, and departing from it. Boats vary in their characteristics, and John will address both sailing yachts and motor boats. We hope to experiment with a model that we can project onto the screen, so that everyone can share what Jonathan would describe as a 'cockpit talk'.
What happens next is really up to you. We will have a few berthing scenarios up our sleeves to bring out if you dry up, and expect to have a flip chart to hand! If not, the Creek will no doubt beckon.
The talk is planned to take place in the conference room at the Haslar Marina office. Please use the labelled entrance door at the back of the office building, on the path that leads down to the gate.
Those attending can meet for drinks and / or a meal at The Creek beforehand and we are welcome to take our drinks over to the conference room for the talk.
The itinerary for the evening is:
18:00 The Creek bar opens for drinks and / or meals at member's own cost
19:30 to 20:00 Talk in the conference room
20:00 Discussion, Q & A
18:00 - 23:00 Creek bar open throughout evening
