Talk: 'The history and restoration of the yacht Boleh'

3rd November 2023, 18:00 - 23:00

Boleh in Dorset - Boleh Trust

Join us at The Hornet Services Sailing Club for a talk on the fascinating yacht "Boleh" which is berthed at Haslar. The talk will be provided by Craig Coupe of the Boleh Trust.

Boleh is unique. She is classed as a 'Junk yacht' weighing in at 17 tonnes. Her rigging is what's known as a Gunter rig and she has a sliding Gunter which is hoisted up above the quadruplicate mast. The idea being that the wind would not have resistance at the lower end of the main sail.

She is powered by a bank of batteries which are charged by a generator and once charged, she runs on electric motors making her quiet when the generator is off.

Her lines are inspired from the area in which she was built- Malaysia. Her stern is high and the midships low with the bow rising slightly. Sailing into the wind in her is interesting as she doesn't point high as she was designed for downwind sailing. In full down-wind mode, she has a main, genoa and 2 booms that extend out both sides of her giving her a very large sailing area.

The talk will address the history of Boleh, when she was built, by who and why. Craig will also talk through the various stages of her life such as being a training vessel for the Royal Navy, her restoration and the shipwrights involved, along with the Charitable aims now and for the future.
