RYA Marine Radio Short Range VHF & GMDSS - Shore Based Course - 1 Day
Location: Mary Mouse Lightship
Cost: £60 plus £30 for licence payable to the RYA, all payable to the tutor on the day of the course.
The RYA Shore Based course provides instruction in the use of marine radios including GMDSS. Routine, distress, urgency and safety procedures. It is conducted using both DSC Radios and simulators.
There are no prerequisite, however you will benefit by knowing the phonetic alphabet prior to attending.
This radio operator qualification authorises the holder to legally operate a VHF radio both with and without Digital Selective Calling (DSC).
Syllabus :
- Background information on the GMDSS system and its equipment and licensing requirements
- Radio rules and regulations
- Operation of marine VHF equipment including DSC functions
- The phonetic alphabet
- Basic radio language and protocols.
- Correct use of the various channels.
- How to make calls to other stations
- How to send a MAYDAY (Distress Alert).
- How to send an urgency alert and a safety call
A short written exam takes place towards the end of the day, the certificate is issued on successfully passing the exam.
Duration: 1 Day.
You will need to bring; two passport sized pictures of yourself, notepad and something to write with.
