Talk: "The Mary Rose" by Sally Tyrrell, Friday 27th March 2026
Sally Tyrrell, Corporate Development Manager with The Mary Rose Trust, has kindly offered to come and talk to us about the most famous Tudor warship in the world, The Mary Rose. Sally will be describing her role at The Trust, the story of this historic ship, her raising in 1982 and subsequent restoration and an overview of the Mary Rose museum.
The Mary Rose was built in 1510 at the start of King Henry VIII's reign and was one of his favourite ships for 34 years, until it sank in 1545. King Henry is credited as the founding father of the Royal Navy and established an impressive fleet, with many vessels like the Mary Rose being built in his dockyard in Portsmouth. Henry VIII was an enthusiastic shipbuilder, whose pride in his "Army by Sea" would see his fleet grow from five at the start of his reign to 53 by the time of his death in 1547. While he may have had many ships, it is the Mary Rose that is remembered as his favourite. It is his establishment of the Royal Navy based in Portsmouth that has played such a significant role in England's history.
We intend to organise a Club visit to the Mary Rose Museum including a guide at a later date (to be confirmed) so this talk is an ideal opportunity to understand the ship's place in history and to prepare yourselves for the wonderful experience of seeing the remains of the ship and the incredible artifacts that depict what life was like in Tudor times.
The talk on 27th March and the visit to the Museum later are separate events so you can book on either or both. The talk is free, the cost of visiting the museum will be advised later. The talk will take place in The Fabrosa room of Hornet Services Sailing Club. Those who wish to have a meal before the talk will be able to order one at the bar in the Hornet Clubhouse from 18:00. To gain entry to The Hornet site you will need to show the Security guards some photo ID of either your driving licence or your passport.
The itinerary for the evening is:
18:00 Bar open at The Hornet for drinks and meals at members own cost
19:30 - 20:30 Talk on The Mary Rose in the Fabrosa Room
