Frostbite 2012 - 10th/11th March 2012

Published 00:00 on 20 Mar 2012

If ever a rally was badly named this was it! The weather was magnificent (although not too spirited for sailing). The sun appeared whilst we were all on passage Saturday and the rest of the weekend felt like summer. Having been asked to capture some rally photographs for possible inclusion in the June edition of "Motor Boat and Yachting" we all left the marina together and our boat "Tallulah" operated as the platform for some fun pictures.

On the left you can see some of our rally fleet of 15 boats leaving Portsmouth Harbour. With the club night on the Friday evening before the rally (see separate GAFIR's report), we had some late entries and we ended up with 15 boats in East Cowes Marina. On the way to Cowes the motor boats were gathered together at sea for the "photo shoot", an example can be seen on the right.

After arrival and the required tea/coffee/cake stop on board Tallulah we enjoyed an afternoon in the sun (I noted an amount of "early season boat cleaning" took place).

As the sun finally set, we all took a Sally Water Taxi up to Cowes (well except Paul & Carol who decided to walk) for our evening meal at the Island Sailing Club (ISC). This proved to be a fun evening with a second rally from the Lymington Town Sailing Club also eating at the ISC. Our Commodore had great pleasure in standing up having heard that the Lymington Club had managed to bring only 5 boats over from their membership of 1,500 to tell them we had managed 15 boats from a membership of 73!!

A quiet Sunday had our boats leaving in the glorious sunshine throughout the day, some on the morning tide and others as the sun set in the evening. If only I could plan weather like this for every rally ........
