Friday the 27th of March saw us join our friends at the Hornet Services Sailing Club for a talk about the Mary Rose by Sally Tyrrell from the Mary Rose Trust.

I'm sure many, if not all of us know the story of the Mary Rose, but Sally gave us a much more in depth look at the role the Trust carries out. Formed in 1979, the Mary Rose Trust is responsible for conserving and displaying what is left of the hull, the vast collection of historical artifacts recovered from the ship and surrounding wreck site and for developing the museum. As well as a wonderful and informative slide show to accompany the talk, Sally brought along some actual artifacts from the ship itself - some anchor rope, which would have originally been covered in pitch, the faint smell of which was still evident! A stone cannonball and a piece of wood that would have formed part of the deck. It was amazing to be able to touch and handle these incredible pieces of history.

There is a Haslar Yacht Club organised visit to the Mary Rose Museum on Monday 20th April and I would highly recommend going. I went a couple of years ago and it really is a fantastic experience.
Keeping the museum open costs the Trust approximately £8000 a day and with no government funding relies almost entirely on ticket sales for it's income.
