Fish & Ships Rally Portland - 9/10 April 2016

Published 01:00 on 15 Apr 2016

I really do think the weather gods are ganging up on us .......!!

After a disappointing Easter where some of the boats that cancelled were intending to leave their boats ready for Fish & Ships at Portland, we'd lost some people before we'd started. However, we still had 8 boats booked to arrive, three of which were from our sister club in East Cowes, the new Medina Yacht Club (MYC). In the event only four boats made it, two of which (Icarus and Tallulah) were already in the area having attended the Easter Rally. Well done to Eglantine (David & Caroline) and Sparkling Spirit (our Treasurer Tim Waite and fellow committee member Jenni Waite) who both made passage from the Solent on Friday 8th. Sadly none of the MYC boats could make it.

Saturday dawned and the Fish & Ships Festival was underway, great food from many of Dorset's local suppliers, good beer (the Piddle Brewery is excellent) and even some fine local gin. In the evening we gathered in "The Boat That Rocks" in the marina complex. This is under new ownership (again) and the food is really good and this, together with a couple of local bands, made for a fine evening.

Sadly, once again the weather turned and the organisers decided to cancel the second day of the festival. This also meant that the cavalcade of Morgan Cars and Harley Davidson's that I'd organised for Sunday morning also had to be cancelled!!

Tim & Jenni made a run for home on the Saturday evening returning safely and the other three boats/crew sat out some ferocious easterlies all day on Sunday.

David and Caroline set off early Monday morning and, of the two remaining boats, Pete and Lin on board Icarus decided to stay on a few more days and Dawne and I drove home leaving our boat, Tallulah, to enjoy Portland for a while longer. We'll be returning next week to make passage back to the Solent for the Bembridge Rally.

I continue to dream about smooth seas and blue skies .......
