HYC Easter 2015 long weekend to Weymouth
Published 01:00 on 10 Apr 2015
Always a popular event, this year 4 motor boats and 7 sailing yachts sailed to Weymouth. Some of the sailing yachts made the passage in two stages, departing Thursday and overnighting in Yarmouth, ideally placed to catch the tide through Hurst narrows on Friday. And a fine evening was had in the King's Head.
At first light on Friday, visibility was poor, but later improved, and the boats sailed in light winds and smooth seas. The motor boats travelled in formation, whilst the yachts at their individual speeds.
Well, smooth seas until the boats went round St Albans Heads using the inshore passage, where all the boats were tossed around like corks, and I think it's fair to say we all got a good soaking! Nonetheless, all boats were safely moored up in Weymouth Marina by close of the 6 o'clock bridge.
Taxis arrived on Saturday evening to take us to The Cove House Inn on Chesil Beach, a particularly beautiful setting, and a fine gastro pub.
Sunday was spent shopping, drinking, listening to outside live music and generally chilling. Yachts Trollinger and Sparkling Spirit sailed in the early evening to Chapman's Pool, to anchor for the night, to catch the tide back to the Solent on Monday.
Weymouth to me, always has a holiday atmosphere, and it was a great weekend to meet Club members, old and new, and fun to leave the Solent.
Don't miss next year's trip!
