Haslar Yacht Club Burns Supper 2017

Published 00:00 on 30 Jan 2017

Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face, Great chieftain o the puddin'-race!

Aboon them a' ye tak your place, Painch, tripe, or thairm:

Guests were welcomed by the wailing of the pipes played expertly by our piper Tom Smith who braved the cold and played a medley of Scottish tunes outside Hardy's Restaurant setting the scene for Haslar Yacht Club's first Burn's Supper.

Once everyone was seated the Haggis was ceremoniously piped in and a toast proposed by the Piper. There followed a dramatic and animated address to the Haggis who was then marched out to the kitchen in readiness for our meal.

The starter course was followed by an excellent rendition of Caledonia played and sung by our very own Simon Stell with chorus provided by the assembled guests. More Scottish songs including Green Grow the Rushes 'O and the original version of Auld Lang Syne were belted out by Simon and his new backing group, Haslar Yacht Club. The main course of rare roast beef was served with neaps and tattles and of course a solid helping of Haggis.

Our Events Officer Stewart delivered the immortal memory which included a respectful acknowledgement of the great bard, one of Burns poems and some useful information on the Haggis. Secretary Jem contributed with a recital of a Burns poem and the evening was finished off with more Scottish songs lead by Simon.

This inaugural event was great fun and made a success through the participation of everyone on the night not least of which Simon for his excellent singing and choice of songs, and Tom for making the evening so authentic.

You powers, who make mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill of fare,
Old Scotland wants no watery stuff,
That splashes in small wooden dishes;
But if you wish her grateful prayer,
Give her a Haggis!
