East Cowes Rally 29 - 30 October 2016

Published 00:00 on 5 Nov 2016

With a continuation of the superb weather we have been enjoying, the rally was set fair to welcome the 25 boats that had registered to attend. We actually had 22 arrive as three our members had problems either mechanical or domestic. East Cowes marina performed their normal friendly efficient job of allocating berths, even accommodating one itinerant member who decided he wanted to berth at the other end of the marina from the rally (!)

With 6 boats arriving on the Friday (a couple even earlier) we were all safely tied up by 1600 on Saturday. Although the weather was beautiful, we decided against a pontoon party, opting instead for a slightly earlier trip to the Island Sailing Club (ISC) with transported provided by the Folly Water Taxi's and paid for by Haslar Yacht Club (HYC).

The meal at the ISC was very good, helped no doubt by the "starter set" of two bottles of wine per table provided by HYC. It was a truly social evening with the Commodore, Grahame Solway, keeping us all amused with his presentation of the "Vice Commodore (Heckling)" badge to Miles Thomas.; well deserved and equally well received!

Sunday dawned and everyone started making their way back to home port, some staying for lunch, others making an early start. Jem Nicholls and his occasional crew decided to venture up the Medina and I received a call (just as I was sitting down to lunch) to say he'd lost any thrust from his engine, even though it was still running.... turns out his prop had fallen off!! A rapid response from Seastart, a tow out to sea, sail back and tow alongside at Haslar temporarily resolved the situation.

This on the rally were:

It is with some sadness we also see Peter & Lyn Day on their last HYC Rally as their boat is now to be sold and they are moving on to other exciting ventures. Peter & Lyn are founder members and have been enthusiastic and supportive members of the club as well has becoming dear friends to Dawne & I, we wish them well.

This also was my last on-the-water event as Events Officer for HYC, I've enjoyed every single one in the 7 years since we formed HYC and I took the role on.
