HYC - New Members Day

Published 18:53 on 23 May 2022

We left our Haslar berth at 1020 and quickly recognised Misty Moon right ahead of us as we motored out of Portsmouth and along the Inner Swashway.    With a gentle breeze from the SE we decided to set sail off Gilkicker Point, but it did not take long before the sails were hanging limp and we were drifting in the tide, thankfully in the right direction.

With no sign of any breeze, we started motoring to arrive at Osborne Bay just after 1200.  As we approached there were a few boats anchored, but we quickly spotted Misty Moon anchored on her own well into the Bay and flying a Haslar Yacht Club banner on her forestay.     We anchored alongside, and settled down for a beautiful stay in quiet and sunny conditions.   It was not long before Brian from Misty Moon appeared in his dinghy, and after a quick catch up onboard, he headed off to another boat from the club anchored as part of our little group.

As we settled down for lunch in the cockpit we spotted the ice cream boat, and after a few frantic waves to catch their attention, they headed over to cap off our lunch with an ice cream!   After lunch, we spotted a couple of other boats across the bay flying the club pennant, and also waved to the Commodore as he motored past in his yacht.   Then at 1430 we started to lift the anchor to head back, only to see Jem in his dinghy approaching.   After a very quick hello, it was anchors away and we were motoring back to Haslar into a steady breeze that had sprung up from the ESE.

Once back in our Haslar berth, we attended a reception for new members at 1730 in the marque by the Lightship, and over a glass of wine were quickly chatting and sharing stories with both old and new members alike.  At 1900, Jem ushered those having dinner into the Lightship where we enjoyed a meal in the newly opened restaurant, which has a great ambience although there was a lot of background noise.   Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed the day from start to finish, felt very welcomed, and are pleased to have joined such a friendly and active yacht club.
